In some ways, concrete flooring is just like any other type of floor covering. To maintain its appearance and make sure it lasts, it is a good idea to give it a good cleaning on a regular basis. One of the most effective ways of achieving this is to use a concrete pressure washing/power washing machine. The equipment is available for hire or, if you have a large expanse of flooring or if your floor takes a lot of punishment, you can invest in your own machine. Hot water machines are more effective than cold water machines.

As strong as the temptation might be to plug in and get stuck in, there are a few steps you need to take. First, you need to prepare the surface. Second, select the appropriate machine settings. Finally, you take your time and give the surface a careful wash.

Preparing the surface involves clearing away debris and moving any furniture away from the area to be cleaned. Using non-porous coverings such as plastic tablecloths or tarpaulins, cover any nearby plants to protect them from the high-pressure spray and harsh chemicals. Make sure any power outlets or exposed wires are covered up. If they don’t have their own covers, seal them with the perennial remedy for everything, duct tape. If there are any dense areas of built-up grease or oil, these should be treated using tri-sodium phosphate (TSP).

Before going nuts with the sprayer, test a small, inconspicuous area first to see how it holds up to the strain. You can adjust the pressure simply by holding it closer to or father away from the surface to be cleaned. Bear in mind that some power-washing machines can exert more than 6,000 psi of power. This is sufficient not just to clean up dust and debris, but strong enough to cause microscopic damage to the surface being cleaned.

Use a high-power washer to maintain decks, driveways, paths, brick pathways, or any other outdoor surface. Used carefully, these machines can even be used to wash windows or the family car. When washing windows, make sure any caulking and glazing around the panes is in good order. When cleaning the exterior of your house, make sure the stream is strong enough to clean the paint without damaging the underlying wood.

Using a few simple precautions, machine-assisted washing your concrete surfaces and other surfaces around the home can prolong their life and maintain their attractive appearance. This can add value to your home if it comes time to sell it.
